Media monitoring, challenging hate speech stereotypes, debunking extremist mythology and shaping public opinion

Campaigns

Following on from our successful An Introduction to Antisemitic Tropes campaign (see below), I led a new campaign which aimed to tackle Islamophobic narratives. I followed a similar structure to the previous campaign, working with a variety of Muslim charities such as the Muslim Council of Britain to plan and write the scripts for the educational videos. I then worked with a voice actor and created the videos below. These videos have been taking up by the organisation Facing History and Ourselves to be used in schools when educating on Islamophobia. The campaign’s web page can be found here.

In collaboration with a variety of counter antisemitism organisations across the UK, I led a campaign to tackle misinformation and provide young people with resource to combat antisemitism. I planned and created a series of videos which briefly covered 7 antisemitic tropes, with examples of how young people might enconuter them today. I also provided a list of resources which can be found on GetTheTrollsOut web page here.

Changing IPSO

Clause 12 of IPSO’s Editor’s Code is meant to protect individuals from discrimination, by the press, based on their race, religion or disability. However this does not apply to groups or categories of people, allowing newspapers to target entire groups using discriminatory language. In early 2020, IPSO held an open consultation for suggestions on how to improve their code.

I devised a campaign which aimed to encourage others into pressuring the body into changing Clause 12 to include groups. Using promotional videos and graphics, I encouraged individuals to follow links to our site, where I created an infographic to explain who IPSO are, what the campaign aimed to achieve, and how they could get involved by sending our template e-mail to IPSO. By the end of the campaign, over 400 people had sent the e-mail.

Video Story Production

For Get The Trolls Out, I created videos aimed to rigorously debunk anti-religious stereotypes and give a voice to personal testimonies and experiences, contributing to a wider awareness and understanding of hate speech.
